Congregation Vertical Files Index

Database Index to RG 425, Congregation vertical files, [188-?]-[ongoing]

This database provides an index to vertical files documenting Presbyterian congregations in the United States from the 1880s to the present. The bulk of the files document churches from the following denominations:

  • Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (PCUSA)
  • United Presbyterian Church of North America (UPCNA)
  • United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (UPCUSA)
  • Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (PC(USA))
There are some files for congregations from other denominations including the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, and the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church.

You may search the database by church name and/or location (city and state). For example, you can search for the Aisquith Presbyterian Church (Baltimore, Md.) by using “Aisquith” or “Baltimore” or “Aisquith & Baltimore.” If you type in a state abbreviation, such as “Md.,” you will get a list of churches within that state. The database does not use the current state postal abbreviations, so you may wish to check this list for the correct abbreviation.

The content of each congregation file varies but may contain brief histories, lists of ministers who served the church, photographs, orders of worship, bulletins for special occasions, clippings, and ephemera. As new material is received, staff will add to existing files and create new files.

This database does not include descriptions of the official records of congregations or the published congregation histories held by the Society. Such descriptions are partially available in our on-line catalog CALVIN. For additional information about our holdings of official congregation records and for information about how to access the congregation vertical files, please contact our reference staff, refdesk@history.pcusa.org
