Biographical Note

James Robinson Campbell was born in Ireland in 1800 and later emigrated to the U.S. He married Mary Cochrane of Gorticross, Ireland. In 1835 they were sent as missionaries to India under the Reformed Presbyterian Church. The couple transferred to the PCUSA in 1836 and were instrumental in establishing the mission station at Saharanpur in 1838. They had twelve children, only six of which reached adulthood: Thomas, James, Mary Anna, George, Louisa? and Amelia. James Robinson Campbell and Mary Cochrane Campbell died in the field in 1864 and 1874? respectively.

Collection Overview

The collection consists of primarily of correspondence written by James Robinson Campbell to his family in Ireland. There is also correspondence written by his wife Mary and his daughter Mary Anna and son Thomas, all to the family. The letters reflect their impressions and of India both within the mission and in general. There is also a brief journal written by James Robinson Campbell which recounts a missionary tour of the Great Mela of Hardwar, India.
