Congregation & Other Organization Vertical Files Index

  search congregation/Organization vertical files index

This database provides an index to vertical files documenting Presbyterian congregations, presbyteries, synods, national agencies, and other organizations in the United States. The bulk of the files document entities from the following denominations:

  • Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (PCUSA)
  • United Presbyterian Church of North America (UPCNA)
  • United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (UPCUSA)
  • Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUS)
  • Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

There are some files for congregations from other denominations including the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, and the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church.

The content of these files varies, but may include brief histories, lists of ministers who served the church, photographs, orders of worship, bulletins for special occasions, clippings, and ephemera. These files do not contain official church records. Genealogical information, such as baptisms and marriages, is typically found in official church records, such as registers or session minutes.

For congregations, you may search the database by church name and/or location (city and state). For example, you can search for the Aisquith Presbyterian Church (Baltimore, Md.) by using "Aisquith" or "Baltimore" or "Aisquith & Baltimore." If you type in a state abbreviation, such as "Md.," you will get a list of churches within that state. The database does not use the current state postal abbreviations, so you may wish to check this list for the correct abbreviation.

This database does not include descriptions of official records or published histories held by the society. Such descriptions are partially available in our on-line catalog, CALVIN.
