Biographical Note / Administrative History

Administrative History

The Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations (COEMAR) was formed in 1959 by the newly constituted United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. to combine the foreign and domestic mission agencies of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and the United Presbyterian Church of North America. The post-World War II work of the United Presbyterian Church in most of the countries in these records was relatively limited, and largely under agreement with other Protestant denominations. Therefore the records of these mission fields has been combined and, though incomplete in some cases (especially Singapore), it forms an adequate research source for those interested in UPCUSA missions in the Church's newer, less tradition-oriented foreign fields.

Consists of missionary correspondence, mission reports and minutes, background papers, newsletters, and miscellany reflecting mission activities and institutions in Afghanistan, Ecuador, the Middle East, Nepal, the Punjab, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

Administrative Information

Processing Information

Series 3, the "Middle East" correspondence, embraces the fields of Egypt, Lebanon (traditional fields), Ethiopia and the Sudan, and emphasizes the cooperative work among them. In no way does it constitute a complete file for the respective nations. Separate records for each were maintained by the Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations, or its predecessors.

The UPCUSA did not establish traditional mission work in Vietnam, so that the files for that country reflect the Church's interest in relief work during the war years, an early end to the conflict, and plans for post-war relief.
