Agricultural Missions in India: The Gospel and the Plow Allahabad Agricultural Institute The roots of the Allahabad Agricultural Institute began in 1903 when Samuel Higginbottom established a small farm school within the Allahabad Christian College (later Ewing Christian College). Developed to teach scientific agriculture to farmers, the school eventually grew into the Allahabad Agricultural Institute. The instituteís programs aimed to improve animal husbandry, cultivation methiods, use of machinery, the water supply ñ in fact, all areas of village life. In a May 1943 "School Sketch" about the Institute, a Hindu son of a rich landlord said: "Iíve learned so much in the Institute besides good farming. Iíve learned what it means to be fair to the poor man. I want to give our tenants a chance." Today the institute still exists as Allahabad Agricultural Institute-Deemed University offering 26 undergraduate programs and 42 graduate level programs.
