Presbyterian involvement with "One Great Hour"

In late 1951, the new stated clerk of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., Eugene Carson Blake, embarked on a world tour to observe relief needs and report on his findings for the 1952 One Great Hour campaign. Accompanied by David Proffitt, president of the National Council of Presbyterian Men, Blake traveled to Europe, the Middle East, India, and Asia. Their subsequent reports drew much attention to One Great Hour of Sharing, both in local congregations and in the secular and religious press.

Blake and Profitt summarized their findings in a cable from Jerusalem:

"More than ever we realize how desperately the world needs the reconciling, sacrificial love taught by and incarnate in Jesus Christ. Refugee men, women, and little children in Korea, India, Pakistan, and the Near East need shelter, clothes, and bread. Even more, they need the bread of life to feed starved spirits that are bitter and without hope apart from Him. Let us who have been so richly blessed make the Lenten season one great time of sharing in the name of Jesus Christ." (Presbyterian Life, Feb. 2, 1952)
