Some
Suggested Duties of a
Congregational Historian or History Committee
- Keep updated history of the congregation. Write an annual historical
account and submit a copy to the Columbia Theological Seminary for safekeeping.
- Keep an archives. It
doesn't have to be a formal heritage room or archives. Keep records
in conjunction with the Clerk of Session.
- Take photographs of all officers, pastors, members, new members, church
buildings, changes to the church building, congregational events. OR
find church members who will take photos. Keep your photograph file
current. You might want to start and maintain a photograph album of
church activities, which is fun to pull out during a fellowship event.
- If the church has or wants to establish a heritage room or archives,
the historian or committee must be in charge of it. Make sure proper
security procedures are established and followed.
- Make bulletin board or heritage room exhibits. Rotate the photographs
and subjects regularly.
- Keep copies of all bulletins, newsletters, newspaper articles, annual
reports, etc. produced by the church.
- Attend training events held by the PHS or your local historical society
or library.
This is not an exhaustive list of duties. The PHS has literature to assist
historians and history committees with these and other duties.
