Finding Aids

Listed below are finding aids (a detailed description of a collection) that describe the contents of processed archival collections at the society. These collections represent only a portion of our holdings and are mainly:

  1. personal papers of ministers and missionaries
  2. records of the national agencies of the denomination and its predecessor denominations
  3. records of ecumenical organizations
  4. a few collections of local church records

If by searching the finding aids you do not locate a certain collection, please contact the reference staff for assistance.

Currently, these finding aids are provided in Encoded Archival Description in XML format. XML files may be viewed only with an XML-compatible browser, such as Internet Explorer 5.

The society's finding aids are divided into two groups. Each list is arranged alphabetically by the name of the collection or record group. Click on the links below to browse the lists or use the search engine to search all the finding aids.

PHS documents the history of several predecessor denominations (PCUSA, PCUS, UPCNA, etc.), the national agencies of the current denomination, the PC(USA), the regional and local governing bodies of the current denomination; and the work of ministers and missionaries.

The National Council of Churches (NCC) records, which are housed at PHS, document the activities of the NCC as well as several of its predecessor organizations, including the Federal Council of Churches.
