1852 Circle

Named in honor of the year PHS was founded, the 1852 Circle provides substantial support that underwrites the preservation of invaluable historic documents as well as programs and services at the society.

Circle members make gifts of $1,000 or more each year. Their tax-deductible contributions guarantee the strength and vitality of our Research Fellowship Program, the Journal of Presbyterian History, and Church Preservation Grants, as well as workshops for congregations, presbyteries, Presbyterian Women groups, stated clerks, and many others.

Becoming an 1852 Circle member at at any level helps PHS share the heritage of American Presbyterianism with wider audiences than ever before.

Eugene Carson Blake $1,000 - $2,499

In August 1963, as Stated Clerk of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., the Reverend Eugene Carson Blake joined the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. and other civil rights leaders at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Maria Fearing $2,500 - $4,999

Known as “Mother From Far Away,” Maria Fearing spent 21 years in the Congo mission field caring for ill and orphaned girls following her recruitment by the Reverend William Henry Sheppard in 1894.

Pearl S. Buck $5,000 - $9,999

Pearl S. Buck served as a Presbyterian missionary to China from 1914 to 1933. Her experiences there were the basis of The Good Earth, and its epic depictions of peasant life in China earned the book a Pulitzer Prize and helped Buck win a Nobel Prize in Literature.

John Witherspoon $10,000 and more

A leading statesman during the Revolutionary War, the Reverend John Witherspoon was one of 12 Presbyterians to sign the Declaration of Independence and the only clergyman.
