The Presbyterian Historical Society traces its beginnings to its founding in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1852. In 1925, the Society was designated the Department of History of the Office of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A.
The Presbyterian Historical Society of the Synod of Texas was organized in 1902, and the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. accepted the Texas society’s collections as the nucleus of its official historical agency in 1926. In 1927, the PCUS collections moved to Montreat, North Carolina, under the name Historical Foundation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Churches. After the two denominations’ reunion in 1983, the Department of History and the Historical Foundation merged in 1988.
In June 2006, the General Assembly affirmed the Committee for the Office of the General Assembly’s decision to close the Montreat regional office of the Society effective December 31, 2006.
