Adopt a Document: Ohio Antebellum letters

Letter from Samuel Crothers to John M. Crothers, May 17, 1822, before conservation treatment.

The Rev. Samuel Crothers (1783-1856) served one Presbyterian congregation in Greenfield, Ohio, his entire career. And yet he was involved in many of the most important movements of his day, including abolitionism and temperance. He was also deeply committed to Presbyterian unity.

This set of sixteen letters (1820 to 1851) show family, religious, and other issues of the day as described by Crothers, family members, and acquaintances. Board member Ginny Rainey’s careful reading contextualized the letters for us, demonstrating their value as a significant historical account of the times in which they were written. The letters were folded into self-envelopes for many years and needed corrective flattening, mending, cleaning, and cataloging.

We are very grateful to the supporters who made the conservation work possible on these letters. They are now accessible via our digital library, Pearl.
