Biographical Note / Administrative History
William H. Sheppard was a Presbyterian minister and foreign missionary to the Belgian Congo. He was born in Waynesboro, Virginia, in 1865. He attended the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Hampton, Virginia, for three years, then studied theology at the Stillman Institute in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, graduating in 1884. He was ordained in 1888 by the Atlanta Presbytery. From 1888 to 1890, he served as pastor of the Zion Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1890, Sheppard was appointed by the Executive Committee of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. to serve as a missionary to the Belgian Congo. He was one of the earliest African-American foreign missionaries for the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. Samuel N. Lapsley, a white minister from Anniston, Alabama, was appointed at the same time, and together the two men established the mission at Luebo, in the province of Kasai. Lapsley died of a "bilious hematuric fever" on March 26, 1892. While on furlough in the United States in 1894, Sheppard married Lucy J. Gantt, and she returned with him to the Congo. They worked together at Luebo and later at the mission station at Ibanche. In 1909, because of their criticisms of the Kassai Rubber Company's treatment of the native people of the Congo, William Sheppard and William M. Morrison were charged with libel and stood trial in Leopoldville. They were both acquitted. The Sheppards continued their missionary work in the Congo until 1910. Upon his return to the United States, Sheppard served as pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church, Louisville, Kentucky, 1912-1926. The Sheppards had two surviving children: Wilhelmina and William Lapsley (called Maxamalinge). William Sheppard died in Louisville on November 25, 1927.
Collection Overview
This is a collection of photographs and papers of William H. Sheppard. The bulk of the collection consists of photographs documenting Sheppard's experiences as a missionary in the Belgian Congo. There are two photograph albums (now disbound), as well as a number of loose photographs and several flexible film (nitrate) and glass negatives. The images depict the Sheppards and fellow Presbyterian Church in the U.S. missionaries, including Lucius DeYampert, Lilian Thomas DeYampert, Alonzo Edmiston, Althea Brown Edmiston, Maria Fearing, William M. Morrison, Bertha S. Morrison, Adolphus Rochester, Annie Taylor Rochester, and several others. Included are photos of Sheppard and William M. Morrison attending their 1909 trial in Leopoldville on the charge of libeling the Kassai Rubber Company. There are numerous photos of native people of the Bateke, Baluba, Bakuba, Zappo Zap, and other tribes. The native people are shown in native dress and occasionally wearing western clothing. There are also photos of the Pantops Home in Luebo and the Maria Carey Home in Ibanche, and group photos of the children living at those homes; the churches at Luebo and Ibanche; the printing press at Luebo; village dwellings; landscapes; and the steamboat Samuel N. Lapsley. Also included is a set of unidentified page proofs (rolled) with images of people and artifacts; some of the proofs match images in the collection.
Papers in the collection include a small amount of correspondence to and from Sheppard and his wife, 1892-1927; typed transcriptions of Sheppard's reminiscences of his time at the Stillman Institute and his diary from September 13-14, 1899; a copy of the Kasai Herald, 1908, featuring an article by Sheppard; two pages of sermon notes; a list of curios brought from Africa, 1893; a Women's Foreign Missionary Society brochure, "How Sheppard Made His Way into Lukenga's Kingdom," 1895; printed materials about the Congo and King Leopold; hymnbooks in Tshiluba and an unidentified language; a stock certificate for the steamboat "Samuel N. Lapsley"; printed inspirational cards; newspaper clippings about Sheppard's speaking engagements to promote work in the Congo; and a Sunday School primer used by Sheppard as a child.
