Adopt a Document: Synod of Catawba Panoramic Photograph

The panoramic photograph of delegates to the 1925 Synod of Catawba meeting at Seventh Street Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, was in need of  restoration. The photograph came to the Society in poor condition, split into four heavily-curled pieces with flaking emulsion.

The PCUSA Synod of Catawba was one of the African-American synods and presbyteries developed as a result of the denomination's mission work among African-Americans in the South after the Civil War. PHS staff member Nancy Taylor came across the photograph in its deteriorating condition and recommended it for assessment. The staff of the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts observed additional minor cracks in the photograph, insect damage, and an overall layer of surface grime.

Detail from the Synod of Catawba panoramic photograph.

Thanks to our contributors, the conservation of this unique photograph is now complete.
