Why I Give: Zandra Maffett

February 6, 2023

--by Zandra Maffett

I was an infant when my father the late Reverend Robert Lee Maffett founded Bethel Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, PA. My formative years, and those of the countless young people who passed through its doors, was nurtured, encouraged and supported by dedicated and loving adult leaders. Through its community center there were a variety of programs for adults and families.

Sadly today, congregations are smaller and many church doors are closing. Memories are fading if not gone. Stories, historical records, photos, newspaper clippings, recordings and videos need to be preserved so they are not lost forever.

I support the African American Leadership and Congregations Collective so that the legacies and contributions of these churches will not be lost. It warms my heart to know that through this initiative future generations will be able to research, learn about Presbyterian schools, hear the voices of church leaders, and choirs, view digitized images of youth groups, camps, and church events and sense the vitality of these congregations. Thanks to the Presbyterian Historical Society and its supporters the life and spirit of these churches will live on, never to be forgotten.
