Get to Know PHS: Sharing Stories

August 18, 2023

Organized in 1852, the Presbyterian Historical Society is the oldest denominational archives in the United States and serves as the national archives for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and its predecessor denominations. PHS has a dedicated staff of communications professionals who support the Society’s mission by sharing histories from the archives with Presbyterians and the wider community.

Sharing Presbyterian History

PHS communications connects fans of Presbyterian history to the records and stories in our collection and provides updates and insights on the work happening in the building. It also lifts up the stories of prominent ministers and church workers including missionaries at home and overseas and uncovers hidden histories that reveal the work and impact of the PC(USA).

How do you stay up to date on the happenings of the Presbyterian Historical Society?

PHS communications create and share new blogs, newsletters, videos, and social media every day. Staff across the institution, along with guest writers, frequently contribute articles that explore the rich and diverse stories found in our records.

Our e-newsletter, PHS Matters, is shared at the end of each month and is free to subscribers. The monthly publication shares the latest news and stories from the Society. Whether it’s a biography of a pastor featured in our African American Leaders blog series, a video that takes viewers on a journey through the Religious News Service photograph collection, or an interview with one of our archivists, PHS Matters provides fascinating stories and dives into the work happening in the building.

Interested in having Presbyterian history delivered to your door? Our bi-annual print and digital newsletter, Presbyterian Heritage, is shared each Fall and Spring with donors and friends of PHS. Supporting Church Communications

The Presbyterian Historical Society, part of the Office of the General Assembly (OGA) in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A), provides historic perspectives and digitized images, videos, oral histories, and more to support the communications efforts of the denomination. You can find our articles, including “This Month in Presbyterian History,” at the Presbyterian News Service.

A Spotlight on Our Impact

PHS communications also highlights the ways our work supports our mission to leverage our collections and archival work to galvanize the transformative power of history in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and wider community. Testimonials from our supporters, statistics, and examples of the work that’s core to our mission are shared in our monthly communications, and every year in our Annual Report.
