In 1898 Paden's interest in Mormon Utah led him to Salt Lake City, where he was involved in local political and community affairs while serving as pastor for the First Presbyterian Church as as Superintendent of Presbyterian Missions in Utah. Until his death in 1931, Paden was active in equalizing political and social power between Mormons and non-Mormons in Utah.
