Biographical Note / Administrative History
Sheldon Jackson was born in Minaville, New York on May 18, 1834. In 1855, he graduated from Union College and entered Princeton Seminary. He graduated from seminary in 1858 and immediately dedicated himself to missionary work. In that same year he married Mary Vorhees.
Sheldon Jackson's first assignment was as a missionary to the Choctaw Nation in Oklahoma, where he worked until poor health forced him to go back East in 1859. After his recovery he was appointed to LaCrescent, Minnesota, where he extended his field hundreds of miles beyond the actual station. He spent ten years in Minnesota and Wisconsin, organizing or assisting in the organization of twenty-three churches. Not content with the monies allocated to him by the Home Mission Board, he raised nearly $20,000 from private sources to further Presbyterian mission work in the West. He called this money the "Raven Fund."
Jackson often expanded his field beyond the capabilities of the Board of Home Missions. Though the Board voiced its disapproval, Jackson was not discouraged. He finally convinced the Board to extend his field as far west as Idaho. Jackson proceeded to Colorado and then had his field transferred to Wyoming, Montana, and Utah. He also traveled to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Nevada. Everywhere he went he organized churches, schools, and found potential missionary ministers.
With the completion of the transcontinental railroad in the later part of the 1860's, a huge territory was opened to Jackson. In the summer of 1869 Jackson went on a missionary tour using the railroad and stage lines, establishing a church a day.
Realizing the importance of women's missionary work, particularly the use of missionary boxes, Jackson sought to consolidate their efforts. He therefore helped to establish the Women's Executive Committee in 1878. The first year the Committee supported twenty teachers and spent $5,296.
In 1877 Sheldon Jackson made his first of twenty-six trips to Alaska to evangelize among the indigenous people of the land. That year he established a mission at Fort Wrangell, Alaska with Amanda Reed McFarland, the first woman missionary to Alaska. Jackson returned to the United States to try to arouse the Presbyterian Church and the U.S. government’s interest in the new mission. He returned to Alaska and opened missions in Sitka and Point Barrow. The industrial school that Jackson founded in Sitka in 1878 became the Sheldon Jackson Junior College, which was active until 2007. In 1885 he was appointed as General Agent for Education in Alaska. By the early 1890's Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, Moravians, and Episcopalians all conducted schools in scattered areas of Alaska from Fort Wrangell to Unalaska, and Point Hope. Although lauded for his devotion to educating and evangelizing the Alaska Natives, some of Jackson’s educational policies, such as banning the usage of Native languages at school, had long lasting, detrimental effects for the Native people.
Jackson constantly toured the Alaskan territory aboard the U.S. Cutter Bear, often accompanied by Captain Michael Healy.
While on an exploration in 1890, Jackson perceived that Alaska Natives were facing slow starvation,
partly because of destruction of their food supplies by whalers. Learning that the Siberians on the Russian side of the Bering Strait had an unfailing food supply of reindeer, Jackson recommended that the United States introduce reindeer to Alaska as a way to both address the Natives’ alleged food insecurities and also to, in Jackson’s consideration, help modernize their traditional ways of life. When he was unable to get Government funds, Jackson turned to private sources and raised enough to buy sixteen reindeer, which were landed in Alaska in August 1891. More animals were secured the next year and in 1893 Congress made its first appropriation for this purpose.
During the 1897 General Assembly Sheldon Jackson was nominated Moderator. Even during his year in office, he visited Lapland and Norway to obtain more reindeer for Alaska. He continued to be active in the church's missionary work until his death on May 2, 1909.
Collection Overview
The collection consists of correspondence, journals, photographs, scrapbooks, notebooks and miscellaneous indices and ephemera. The most comprehensive series is the correspondence. The majority of Jackson's outgoing correspondence is held at Princeton Seminary. An edited version of the volumes of incoming and outgoing correspondence, completed by Mary A. Gildersleeve in 1922, is included in the collection. It is not clear why this transcript was completed, or what was to be included, so its accuracy can not be determined without comparing it to Princeton's holdings.
Also available on microfilm are the twenty-two volumes of correspondence that Jackson had compiled in 1904. This series is essentially a typed transcript of the unbound original correspondence.
The incoming bound correspondence, dating from 1857-1869, mostly deals with the Woman's Board of Home Mission's, particularly the missionary boxes and donations for this purpose. The unbound correspondence and the official outgoing and incoming bound correspondence have more content.
It should also be noted that the "travel journals" contain more narrative than the "journals," which are more like date books. There are transcripts of two travel logs included in the travel log series (Missionary tours--1875 and 1877). These transcripts were donated to the Department of History in 1969, but who completed them and from what original text is unknown.
The work of Edward Muybridge and H. H. Brodeck, well known photographers of Alaskan subjects and landscapes, are represented in the extensive photograph collection.
Chronological, geographic, and alphabetical card file indexes to correspondence are available at the society; consult repository for details.
Researchers should be aware that the Sheldon Jackson library is not part of this collection. The card catalog should be consulted for library materials that Jackson donated to the Historical Society.
It is strongly recommended that researchers use the microfilm copies of the correspondence, photographs, and travel journals. The originals are becoming increasingly brittle and should not be handled. The scrapbooks should not be handled under any circumstances. Asterisks in the scrapbook series listing indicates that the scrapbook's spine is missing and the processor created the title from the information available.
It should also be noted that Jackson's collection of some three to four thousand Alaskan artifacts are maintained by the Sheldon Jackson Museum in Sitka, Alaska. The Smithsonian has three to four hundred of Jackson's Alaskan objects, and the Princeton Theological Seminary Museum has about one thousand Indigenous objects, mainly from the Southwest and Southeast Alaska. One other large collection of artifacts was purchased from Jackson by the Field Museum following the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Administrative Information
The photographs were processed and indexed by a volunteer in 1986. The index is based on the numeric order and the subject headings established during the first processing. To maintain the integrity of the index, the photographs have not been reprocessed. The index to the photographs follows this finding aid.
During the initial processing of Jackson's photographs, prints illustrating published reports were removed from the publications and added to the photograph collection. The titles of the reports can be seen in the photograph series listing.
