Biographical Note
Anne M. Coxe was the daughter of John D. Coxe. He was born in 1752 and became a President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia. He died in 1824. Anne married James Ross about 1830.
Collection Overview
Record Group 296 consists of Anne C. Ross' commonplace book, which she kept from 1816 until at least 1876. She copied many extracts of poetry into the book. It also includes some notes by and an obituary of her sister Ellen Coxe Watmough, a drawing of their brother Edward (by Ellen), and a letter written to Anne by her then fiance James Ross. Anne also pressed some small items between the pages--leaves, a lock of hair, and labels. In addition, she saved John D. Coxe's certificate of membership in the Philadelphia Dispensary, signed in 1787.
