Biographical Note / Administrative History
David Rice was born in 1733, in Hanover County, Virginia. In 1762, he was licensed by the Presbytery of Hanover. The following year he married Mary Blair. From 1763 to 1769 he served several congregations in Virginia.
Rice moved to Kentucky in 1783, and within five years established the Presbytery of Transylvania, having first gathered the scattered Presbyterians dwelling in the province into regular congregations. Rice served as the new presbytery's first moderator. In 1792 he was a member of the convention which framed the constitution of the state of Kentucky. In 1802 the population in the area had grown enough to require the creation of the Synod of Kentucky. Once again, Rice was the first moderator.
Rice was renowned as an abolitionist and an educator. He died in Kentucky in 1816.
