James Richards was born in New Canaan, CT. He studied at Yale College. In 1794 he was called by the Presbyterian church in Morristown, NJ, where he remained until 1809. At that time he accepted a call from the Newark Presbyterian Church. In 1805 he was elected moderator of the General Assembly. He held a trusteeship and a directorship at Princeton Theological Seminary.
In 1823 Richards became a professor of Christian theology at Auburn Theological Seminary. He remained in that post until his death in 1843.
Collection Overview
This small collection of Richards' papers includes five letters written between 1807 and 1831. Three of these are addressed to John McDowell; one to Richards' early mentor Dr Henry Dwight; and one to the Philadelphia bookseller William Woodward.
Of particular note is the letter to Dwight. It introduces Dwight to one Israel Lewis, "agent for the colored colony now settling in Canada."
