Biographical Note / Administrative History
Henry A. Boardman was born in Troy, NY. He studied at Yale College and Princeton Theological Seminary. In 1833 he was called to the Tenth Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia. This was to be his only congregation; he served it for forty-six years.
Boardman was General Assembly Moderator (Old School) in 1854. He retired from his pulpit in 1876, but continued to serve the church as Pastor Emeritus until his death in 1880.
Collection Overview
This collection consists of Boardman's sermons and correspondence. A few records relate specifically to 10th Presbyterian Church; letters to the session, and a minute and resolution concerning Boardman's status as Pastor Emeritus. Notable material on the Civil War includes an address to a regiment in the first days of the war, two sermons preached in its first two weeks, and one on a national day of fasting in 1863.
