Biographical Note

Dr. Martin was appointed to the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions in 1849, assigned to China. He and his wife settled at Ningpo station. In 1857 his fluency in the Chinese language won for him the post of interpreter to the U.S. legation to China. In 1863 Dr. Martin was transferred to Peking. In 1868 he organized the International Law and Language School in Peking. He died in Peking in 1916.

Collection Overview

This collection consists of two manuscripts: a history of the Peking Mission and a longer work on the two American embassies to China.
