Biographical Note / Administrative History
Isaac Moorhatch was born in Urmia, Persia, 28 Nov 1874 to the Assyrian Presbyterian Rev. Baba Moorhatch and Nanajan "Nancy" Tamraz. He grew up in that country and attended the Presbyterian college in Urmia. In 1897 he began working as an evangelical and educational missionary for the Board of Foreign Missions (PCUSA).
In 1909 Moorhatch arrived in the United States with the intention of entering a Presbyterian seminary and returning to work among the Persian Muslims after graduation. In the end he enrolled in the Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, KS in 1912.
In 1910 Moorhatch established the Assyrian Presbyterian Church of Gary, IN. In 1923 he arrived in Philadelphia, where the Assyrian colony asked him to serve as their pastor. After ordination, he took charge of the Assyrian Presbyterian Mission. He served this mission until retirement in 1950. He and his wife Khatoon C Moorhatch had 4 children. He passed away on 22 Feb 1951 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA..
Collection Overview
This collection includes Moorhatch's two-volume manuscript work Assyrian and National Church History: History of Iran: Rise of Islam. The work is written in Assyrian, and each volume includes a table of contents. The date of the manuscript is not known, but internal evidence suggests that it was finished in 1938.
