Biographical Note / Administrative History
Upon graduation from Westminster College in 1862, James R. Miller joined the United States Christian Commission, an agency set up to minister to soldiers. After the war he completed his theological studies and accepted a call to Philadelphia's Bethany Presbyterian Church. In 1870 he married Louise King.
In 1880 Miller became Editorial Superintendent of the Board of Publication and Sabbath School Work and at the same time accepted a call to the Holland Memorial Mission, which he soon organized into a church. For seventeen years he shared this pastorate with William Mitchell Paden. He then began work with another mission in Philadelphia, which was to become St. Paul's Church.
