Cameron was born in Scotland in 1770 or 1771. His family moved to the United States in 1773, settling in Virginia. They migrated to Kentucky in 1781. Cameron was a delegate of Transylvania Presbytery to the 1809 General Assembly. He preached widely throughout Kentucky, and founded several churches.
