Biographical Note / Administrative History

Biographical Note

Walter L. Lingle was born Oct. 3, 1868, in Rowan County, North Carolina. He attended Davidson College from 1888 to 1893, earning B.A. and M.A. degrees. He graduated as a Doctor of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia, in 1896 and was an assistant instructor of Hebrew and Greek at the seminary from 1896 to 1898. Ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUS) in 1897, Lingle served as pastor of the Dalton Presbyterian Church, Dalton, Georgia (1898-1902); First Presbyterian Church, Rock Hill, South Carolina (1902-1907); and First Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, Georgia (1907-1911). From 1911 to 1914, Lingle was the McCormick Professor of Hebrew at Union Theological Seminary. He then served as Professor of Church History and Missions until 1924, when he assumed the presidency of the General Assembly's Training School for Lay Workers in Richmond. In 1929, Lingle resigned this position to become the president of Davidson College, a position he held until his retirement in 1940.

In addition to his pastoral and academic duties, Lingle served as moderator of the PCUS Synod of North Carolina in 1912 and moderator of the General Assembly of the PCUS in 1920. He was very active in the development of the Mountain Retreat Association in Montreat, North Carolina, serving as chairman of the Program Committee from 1910 to 1924. He was a member of the PCUS Executive Committee of Home Missions, the Board of Trustees of Agnes Scott College, and the International Sunday School Lesson Committee. As a member of the PCUS Committee of Publication, Lingle supervised the publication of the Presbyterian Hymnal and a revision of the Book of Church Order. He also edited the Union Seminary Review from 1912 to 1922.

Lingle was a prolific writer as well as an editor. Serving as a contributing editor to the Christian Observer and The Presbyterian of the South, he published numerous articles in these and other publications, including a column, "Timely Topics," that appeared in the Christian Observer. Other publications included Presbyterianism: A Heritage and a Challenge; The Bible and Social Problems; Presbyterians: Their History and Beliefs; and Memories of Davidson College.

Walter Lingle married Merle Dupuy of Davidson, North Carolina, in 1900. They had four children: Louise D. Lingle, Nan R. Lingle, Walter L. Lingle, Jr., and Caroline Lingle Lester. Walter Lingle died on September 19, 1956, at the age of 88.

Collection Overview

The collection consists largely of incoming and outgoing correspondence, 1898-1951, documenting Walter Lingle's ministry; his work at Union Seminary, the General Assembly's Training School in Richmond, Davidson College, and with various PCUS committees; and personal and family matters. Correspondents include Charles R. Erdman, Thomas W. Lingle, William Lingle, Homer McMillan, R. E. Magill, Walter W. Moore, Richard C. Reed, Egbert W. Smith, Henry H. Sweets, Samuel M. Tenney, Wilbert W. White, and Hallie Winsborough.

Separate series contain additional material documenting Lingle’s career. Correspondence, reports, minutes, other materials, 1908-1925, relate to Lingle's work as Chairman of the Program Committee of the Mountain Retreat Association. Lectures, coursework, correspondence with students, student papers, and other materials, 1912-1924, document Lingle's work as a professor at Union Seminary. And correspondence, reports, minutes, and other items, 1914-1934, document Lingle's work on PCUS committees including the Ad Interim Committee on Training Men for the Ministry and Reducing the Number of Theological Seminaries (1933-1934); the Hymn Book Committee (1926-1928); and the Committee on the Constitution and Closer Relations (1920-1922).

Lingle’s work as a writer and editor are documented through articles and book reviews, including photocopies of his column, "Timely Topics," from the Christian Observer. The collection also contains biographical and genealogical information on the Lingle, Anders, Bethel, Box, Harvey, Leader, Martin, and McClellan families; and a small number of photographs.
